Battle of Legazpi Pylon

The Battle of Legazpi Pylon is considered as one of the National Historical Sites in the Philippines. It was acclaimed by the Manila-based National Historical Institute in 2001. It is a memorial to the valiant defense of Albayanos against American invaders in 1900.

Found in the city center of Legazpi, Albay, in the middle of Quezon Ave and Rizal St, the Battle of Legazpi Pylon, is one of the monuments that continue to give the locals a sense of pride – and the whole Filipino nation to cherish and remember.

People who love the rich history and culture of the Philippines would surely want to see the site themselves. Based on its history, as written in a small tablet below the memorial, on January 23, 1900, approximately 800 farmer Filipinos led by Commander Antonio Reyes bravely fought the American soldiers of the third battalion of infantry-47. They were E.U. volunteers, headed by Brig. Gen. Willam A. Kobie.

Filipinos also defended the Legazpi coast. There were 200 defensive forces including that of Commander Reyes’. The bombing of the defensive trench (which was the San Rafael bridge) was forcefully stopped. Here, they courageously (and manually) fought the Americans who were in pursuit of power. The whole heroic fleet died during this conflict.

The Battle of Legazpi Pylon is meters away from LCC Mall. Different establishments including restaurants and banks are nearby. It is about 3 kilometers from Legazpi Airport or about a 10-minute tricycle ride (P10-P15). Jeepneys (P8) ply from the Old Albay District, where St. Gregory the Great Cathedral and Peñaranda Park are situated, going to the City Center of Legazpi City. There’s also a good view of Mayon Volcano from the Battle of Legazpi Pylon, on a clear day.
