Bohol Butterfly Conservation Center

Nature preservation is one of the things Filipinos specifically Boholanos are concentrating in the past years. One very spectacular tourist spot I found in Bohol is the Butterfly Conservation Center. There are 3 Butterfly Conservation Centers in Bohol, namely, Simply Butterflies Conservation Center, Sagbayan Peak Butterfly Dome and Can-olin Butterfly Sanctuary.

The Butterfly Compound that we visited during this recent stay in Bohol is Simply Butterflies Conservation Center which is a lot bigger and better compared to the Butterfly Farm in Boracay. It is located in Bilar, Bohol in the Philippines. It is a 30-40 minutes travel from Tagbilaran City, 15-20 minutes away from Loboc River and 5 minutes away from the Mahogany Man-Made Forest.

In the orientation area, we were entertained by a local tour guide who showed us the biggest butterfly and the biggest moth in the Philippines and informed us many other things about butterflies before going to the garden. He showed us the butterfly life cycle starting from the egg, to caterpillar, to pupa and of course the full grown butterfly. He showed us some images from the cardboard and pictures in frames found in the area. He also gave us actual egg and caterpillars to hold and feel.

Butterflies mate in such a way that male butterfly are always below the female butterfly because females are superior than male. To determine which ever is the male and female between the two butterflies during mating, the female is seen as the only one flapping her wings while carrying the male and the male is simply sticking his into hers. =)

The Butterfly Conservation Center has both a Butterfly garden and a Butterfly enclosure. The garden is in an open landscape with flower garden that attracts butterfly to feed on them. The place is visited by different species of local butterflies naturally. There are seats, pagoda and a hammock where one can relax under the shade and watch the butterflies flutter by.

The Butterfly enclosure is surrounded by nets to house butterflies and release some of them once the proper time comes. These housed butterflies are used for research and preservation of both butterflies and plants. The garden is full of colorful plants obviously because of the pollination activity of the full-grown butterflies.

During our short tour we also learned that spiders are predators to butterflies and there isn’t any problem if this is happening inside the Butterfly Conservation Center as it is part of the Cycle of Nature.
Inside the Butterfly Conservation Center you can eat some foods at their Restaurant while watching the butterflies. You can buy at the Gift Shoppe which sells butterflies and butterfly by-products. There’s also a Visitor Center where groups can chit-chat and a Barbeque Stand to grill and eat your favorite barbeques. Comfort Rooms and a spacious Car Park are also available. The butterfly conservation center opens daily from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
