The Legazpi Airport is a major airport in the Bicol Region in the Philippines. It is located in Legazpi City, Albay and it serves the locals and tourists in the City and its vicinity. Located about 12 kilometers from Mayon Volcano, it has a single runway dimensions of 2280 x 36 meters, longer than those of the former airports of Bacolod (1958 x 30 meters) and Mandurriao Airport in Iloilo (2100 x 43 meters).
The Airport in Legazpi is known in Filipino as “Paliparan ng Legazpi” and Bikol as “Palayogan nin Legazpi“. It is operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines and it can handle medium-sized civilian jets and military aircraft.
The surface of the Legazpi City Airport is asphalt and the length of the runway in feet is 7480. In aviation technical terms, the airport’s direction is 06/24.
Based on the 2010 statistics, the Legazpi Airport tallied a total of 435,151 passengers in 2,556 aircraft movements with 979 metric tons of cargo. It can handle night landings and take-offs, on prior notice, even though it is operating as SR-SS (sunrise-sunset) due to the lack of ILS (Instrument Landing System).
The Regional Development Council previously approved a feasibility study to transfer the airport to a new site, about 27 kilometers away from Mayon Volcano, in Barangay Bariis south of Legazpi City. Apart from the advantage of being away from Mayon’s ashfall during eruption, it is halfway between Legazpi and the Sorsogon province where the emerging eco-tourism destination of Donsol with its whale sharks, locally known as “butanding” are found.
In 2006, politicians were able to maneuver that the site be transferred to Alobo, Daraga which is about 15 kilometers from Mayon’s crater and it will be named as Southern Luzon International Airport.
In Legazpi Airport, Airphil Express has regular flights to/from Manila and Cebu Pacific have flights to/from Cebu and Manila. Philippine Airlines caters flights to/from Manila and Zest Airways has to/from Manila flights.
