Pacific War Memorial

Corregidor Island in the Philippines is a historical place as well as a tourist destination. One of the main attractions in the island is the Pacific War Memorial located west side of the island. It was built by the United States Government to honor the American and Filipino servicemen who participated in the Pacific War. It cost approximately 3 million dollars and was completed in 1968.

At the Pacific War Memorial one can see the stunning dome which is a 6,000-square meter complex with a rotunda in which a circular altar falls directly under the dome’s open center through which light falls on the altar during daylight hours. It also has 14 murals showing the heroic battles fought by Filipinos from 15th century up to the present day. The structure was designed by Francisco Mañosa and inaugurated by then President Fidel V. Ramos last August 28, 1992. It is in this area that every May 6 at exactly 12:00 noon, the sunlight falls on the center of the altar and visitors are requested to offer a moment of silence since this is the time when Corregidor and the Philippines fell into the hands of the Japanese.

There is also a huge marker outside the Pacific War Memorial and the following words were engraved on the marker:” Erected to the Filipino and American fighting men who gave their lives to win the land, sea and air victories which restored freedom and peace to the Pacific Ocean Area”.

Such great pictures! So much has been done on the island since I visited (several times) in 1968. The Memorial was being finished at that time.I can see alot of effort has been put forth to make it a comfortable tourist destination.
