One of the best places to spend an early morning or afternoon stroll in General Santos is at the newly developed Plaza Heneral Santos (Filipino) or General Santos Plaza (English). It is strategically located along Pendatun Avenue, near the City Hall and other different establishments including Schools, Church and Hotels.
Considered as one of the busiest parks in General Santos, this P34 million Plaza Heneral Santos was unveiled to the public on September 4, 2009. On the night of the inauguration of the park, General Santos City Mayor Jun Acharon, Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio and First Lady Rose Acharon switched on the ceremonial button to signal the synchronized illumination of all the parkβs lamp posts.
Developed by Dellosa Design Builders, Inc, Plaza Heneral Santos is placed on a 4.8 hectare land owned by the government. People from different walks of life can enjoy the park day and night – as long as they follow the basic park rules such as no littering, no vandalizing, etc.
General Paulino Santos Shrine
The General Paulino Santos Shrine can be found inside the Plaza Heneral Santos. The City got its name from this brave and talented General born on June 22, 1890 in Camiling, Tarlac and died on August 29, 1945 in Kiangan, Mt. Province. General Santos (the person) is the son of Remigio Santos and Rosa Torres. He graduated as a Valedictorian in the Military Academy of the Philippines in 1914. As a Governor, he improved the education, agriculture and communication in Lanao. He became a Jail Director and developed the Davao Penal Colony and responsively moved the New Bilibid Prison to Muntinlupa. He became the First Commander of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and made six conferences in South Cotabato. For all of his achievements in the Mindanao Area, Buayan (formerly Dadiangas) changed its name to General Santos and later on it became a City. The remains of General Paulino Santos and his wife Elisa Santos, who died in October 25, 1975, were placed inside the monument.
How to get there
From the General Santos International Airport, take a taxi (P300) or single motorcycle (P150) going to Plaza Heneral Santos, near the City Hall. Tricycles (P10) ply the streets and they can take any route you want. It is about 800 meters northwest of Queen Tuna Park; so walking is a good choice if the weather is fine – and it’s healthy too.

Sir Mark… juz wana THANK YOU again for ds really helpful Travel Guide re GenSan… i got d chance to travel there 1st-wk of October ds year… & i did stay at Sydney Hotel where i had a 5th-F room with city-view veranda… though Plaza Heneral Santos was undergoing some minor construction-work facing the hotel, still i enjoyed the over-all view as i could see church-tower… one scary eye-sore i observed about the city was the street-children roaming when one evening i walked from the hotel to a local Phamacy to go buy some personals… quite a long flight & airport quite far from city-proper but i still would wana go back to GenSan with my kids, i hope… btw, how come i don’t receive anymore any of your travel updates… please keep including me in your subscribers’ list, Sir… i wish you More Ble$$ing$ for your family, Sir Mark…

Sir Mark, thanxlot 4 ds rich info re General Santos City, only thru ur posts i learn dat d city is named from another really brave hero born here in my province — am from Tarlac City proper… & Sir, d hero’s town is Camiling (located in d western part of Tarlac), not Camalig, as erroneously printed in d description under d hero’s shrine-foto… i hope i get d chance to also visit Gen-San… nice b/w foto, Sir π
Maam Louella,
Thank you for the heads-up! I’ve modified ‘Camalig’ to ‘Camiling’. Maybe I was sleepy when I wrote it. =)
