Ever wondered where to go next after descending from the famous Osmena Peak in Barangay Mantalongon? San Guillermo de Aquitania Parish Church can be one of your options. It is one of the well-preserved Baroque-Rococo structures in the province of Cebu. It suffered minor damages during the 2013 earthquake, which greatly affected the island of Bohol, but the San Guillermo de Aquitania Parish Church continue to look strong.
Established as visita ng Carcar in the year 1960, San Guillermo de Aquitania Church became a parish in 1711. The current church began in 1802 and ended in 1825. The convent was completed in 1832 and the bell tower was made in the year 1860. Assigned to patronage San Guillermo de Aquitania, the Dalaguete Church and Watch Tower in the front is used as a defense against attacks by pirates in the early 19th century. The nave or the central area of the church was mended in 1868. Done by the famous painter Canuto Avila, the ceiling paintings of the San Guillermo de Aquitania Parish Church started in 1935. The Dalaguete Church is on important examples of Filipino-Spanish architecture and one of the remaining and virtuous church-fortress complex in the country. Announced as a national historic landmark on April 16, 2004, the San Guillermo de Aquitania Parish Church is still one of the most visited tourist spots in the municipality of Dalaguete, which is considered as the Vegetable and Summer Capital of Cebu.
For those who are planning to visit the church, you may take a southbound bus going to Dalaguete or further south and tell the driver to drop you off at the Municipal Hall. From there, you can just walk going to nearby shore and you won’t miss the park and this church.
